What material are ceramic brake pads made of?

Ceramic brake pads subvert the traditional concept of ceramic brake pads, ceramic brake pads are composed of ceramic fibers, iron-free filler substances, adhesives and a small amount of metal.

Ceramic brake pads are a kind of brake pads, many consumers will be mistaken for ceramic at first, in fact, ceramic brake pads are from the principle of metal ceramics rather than non-metallic ceramics, brake pads due to high speed braking, high temperature on the friction surface, according to measurement, can reach 800 ~ 900 degrees, and some even higher. At this high temperature, the surface of the brake pad will have a similar reaction of cermet sintering, so that the brake pad has good stability at this temperature. The traditional brake pads will not produce sintering reaction at this temperature, due to the sharp rise in surface temperature will melt the surface material and even produce air cushion, which will cause a sharp reduction in brake performance or brake loss after continuous braking.

(1) The biggest difference between ceramic brake pads and traditional brake pads is that there is no metal. The metal in the traditional brake pads is the main friction material, the braking force is large, but the wear is large, and the noise is easy to appear. After the installation of ceramic brake pads, in normal driving, there will be no abnormal noise (that is, scratching sound). Because the ceramic brake pads do not contain metal components, the metal noise of friction between the traditional metal brake pads and the dual parts (that is, the brake pads and the brake disc) is avoided.

(2) Stable friction coefficient. Friction coefficient is the most important performance index of any friction material, which is related to the braking ability of brake pads. In the braking process due to friction generated heat, the increase in working temperature, the general brake pad friction material is affected by temperature, the friction coefficient begins to decline. In practical applications, friction will be reduced, thus reducing the braking effect. The friction material of ordinary brake pads is not mature, and the friction coefficient is too high, resulting in unsafe factors such as direction loss, burning, and scratching of brake discs during braking. Even if the temperature of the brake disc reaches 650 degrees, the friction coefficient of the ceramic brake pad is still about 0.45-0.55, which can ensure that the vehicle has good braking performance.

(3) Ceramics have good thermal stability and low thermal conductivity, good wear resistance. The long-term use temperature is 1000 degrees, which makes the ceramic suitable for the high performance requirements of various high performance brake materials, and can meet the technical requirements of high speed, safety and high wear resistance of brake pads.

(4) It has good mechanical strength and physical properties. Able to withstand large pressure and shear force. Friction material products in the assembly before use, there is a need to drill, assembly and other mechanical processing, in order to make brake pad assembly. Therefore, it is required that the friction material must have sufficient mechanical strength to ensure that there is no damage and fragmentation during processing or use.

(5) Has a very low thermal attenuation. (6) Improve the performance of brake pads. Because of the rapid heat dissipation of ceramic materials, its friction coefficient is higher than that of metal brake pads in the manufacture of brakes.

(7) Security. Brake pads will produce instantaneous high temperature when braking, especially at high speeds or emergency braking. At high temperatures, the friction coefficient of the friction sheet will decrease, which is called thermal decay. The low thermal decay of ordinary brake pads, the high temperature state and the brake oil temperature rise during emergency braking make the brake brake delay, and even the loss of braking effect low safety factor.
