To determine whether the brake pad is seriously worn, you can use the following methods:
First, observe the thickness of brake pads
The brake pad is mainly composed of a metal bottom plate and a friction sheet. When braking, the friction sheet contacts with the brake disc to produce friction, thereby achieving the braking function. The new car brake pad thickness is usually about 1.5 cm (there is also a saying that the new car brake pad thickness is about 15 mm, the friction part is generally 10 mm), when the brake pad thickness is worn to only 1/3 of the original (about 5 mm), it should be considered to replace. The remaining 2 mm is dangerous. Replace it immediately. The brake pad thickness can be observed in the following ways:
Direct measurement: Use tools such as vernier calipers to directly measure the thickness of brake pads.
Indirect observation: carefully observe after removing the tire, or use a mobile phone to reach into the wheel hub to take photos to enlarge the view. In addition, the flashlight light can also be used to make it parallel to the wheel hub plane at a certain Angle (such as 15° Angle) to observe the wear of the brake pads.
Second, listen to the braking sound
Some brake pads have a metal needle embedded in them, and when the friction pad is worn to a certain extent, the metal needle will contact the brake disc, resulting in a sharp abnormal sound when braking. This abnormal sound lasts a long time and does not disappear, which is to remind the owner that the brake pads need to be replaced.
Three, feel the braking effect
When the brake pads are seriously worn, the braking effect will be significantly reduced. The specific performance is as follows:
Longer braking distance: After the brake is pressed, the vehicle takes longer or longer to stop.
Pedal position change: During emergency braking, the pedal position becomes lower and the travel becomes longer, or the brake pedal feels softer and the travel becomes longer.
Insufficient braking force: When stepping on the brake, it feels difficult, and the brake sensitivity is not as good as before, which may be that the brake pads have basically lost friction.
4. Check the dashboard warning light
Some vehicles are equipped with brake pad wear indicators. When the brake pads wear to a certain extent, the indicator light will light on the instrument panel
Remind the owner to replace the brake pad in time. Note, however, that not all vehicles are equipped with this feature.
In order to ensure driving safety, it is recommended to check the wear and tear of brake pads regularly. General vehicles driving about 30,000 kilometers should check the brake conditions, including brake pad thickness, brake oil level, etc., is normal. At the same time, when replacing brake pads, you should choose reliable and safe products and follow the guidance for replacement.
