How to identify automotive brake pad aging?

(Cómo identificar el envejecimiento de las pastillas de freno del automóvil?)

Identifying the aging of brake pads can be observed and judged from the following aspects:

First, observe the appearance of brake pads

Wear degree:

Thickness check: The thickness of the brake pads will gradually wear out with use. Usually, the thickness of the new brake pads is about 10 mm (different models and manufacturers may vary), and when it is worn to only 2-3 mm, it needs to be replaced. If the brake pads have been worn to a thickness of less than 3 mm, it indicates that the brake pads have been seriously aged and replaced immediately.

Wear indicator: some brake pads have a built-in metal wear indicator, when the brake pads wear, the indicator will friction with the brake disc to produce a larger noise, to remind the driver to replace the brake pads.

Surface condition:

Observe whether the brake pad surface cracks, spalling or severe wear uneven phenomenon. These phenomena are the performance of aging brake pads.

2. Driving experience

Braking effect:

If the driver feels that the brake pedal travel becomes longer and needs to step on the brake deeper to achieve the desired braking effect, it may be a sign of excessive brake pad wear. Because the worn brake pads cannot provide enough friction, the braking distance increases and the braking effect decreases significantly.

If you feel that the vehicle brake is not sensitive or the braking force is weakened when braking, it may also be a sign of aging brake pads.

Noise:

An unpleasant sound when braking is one of the common signs of brake pad aging. When the brake pads are worn to a certain extent, the metal backboard will rub against the brake disc and make a sharp sound. If the driver hears an obvious metal friction sound when he taps the brakes while driving, it is likely that the brake pads need to be replaced.

Three, dashboard warning light

Modern cars are usually equipped with brake system warning lights, when the brake pads wear to a certain extent, the warning light will be lit to remind the driver to check and replace the brake pads in time. Therefore, the driver should pay close attention to the warning light on the dashboard and take immediate measures when the brake system warning light comes on.

Fourth, regular inspection and maintenance

In order to ensure driving safety, the driver should regularly check and maintain the brake pads. This includes checking the thickness, surface condition and braking effect of the brake pads. At the same time, it is also necessary to pay attention to whether the brake oil in the brake oil pot is sufficient, because the lack of brake oil may also affect the brake performance.
